Step-by-Step Roof Installation Guide for Homeowners

DIY step-by-step roof installation guide

If you have a self-build or refurbishment project under way, installing a roof may be an important part of it. Do not underestimate the job. The roof is what keeps the whole structure sound.

This is a step-by-step guide to installing a roof correctly, but it is only for people who are reasonably proficient at DIY. If that is not you, hire a professional for your roof installation. The work is too difficult and too dangerous for a novice.

Step 1. Preparation

On an existing roof, strip the current covering and clear the surface of debris. Check that the surface is sound and make any repairs that are needed.

Step 2. Ventilation system

Ventilation stops moisture causing dampness and rot. Fix a rafter roll at the eaves, tacked to the rafters, to draw fresh air in. It must end above any insulation so that the insulation does not block the airflow. Also fit an underlay support tray against the bargeboard, so air can enter and the underlay cannot sag into the cavity.

Step 3. Underlay

Use roofing felt or membrane that meets building regulations. It acts as a secondary barrier against water getting in. Tack it down with some slack so water runs off rather than pooling against the rafters. A gap may be left at the ridge for air circulation.

Step 4. Battens

Batten size and spacing depend on the size of the tile, so check the manufacturer’s guidelines. The first batten goes at the lowest fix point. Find this by subtracting the length the tile overhangs the gutter from the tile’s hanging length.

The top fix point should be at the recommended distance from the ridge system. Divide the distance between the two fix points by the tile’s maximum gauge to get the number of courses. This sets the number and position of the battens. Mark all the fix points, keeping the lines horizontal.

Line up the top edge of each batten with its marked line and nail it to every rafter. You may need to allow an overhang at each side for a verge system.

Step 5. Tile installation

Start at the bottom edge with a starter course, with each tile overhanging slightly. Fix each tile with nails or clips as the manufacturer recommends. Lay the following courses upwards towards the ridge. The tiles must interlock correctly to keep the roof weatherproof.

Cut tiles with a tile cutter or saw to fit around vents, chimneys and other obstacles. Use special tiles or flashings at valleys and ridges to divert water away from these weak points. Fit hip tiles along the hips. Fit ridge tiles at the peak on a breathable ridge membrane, screwed firmly to the ridge batten to resist wind uplift.

Step 6. Finishing off

Fit verge units following the manufacturer’s instructions, then check for any gaps that need finishing or sealing. Clear away debris and inspect the roof for any repairs still needed.
