Roofing at the Foot of the Ochils
The Hillfoots villages sit in a line along the base of a steep hill scarp, and that position affects how property here weathers in ways that are not obvious until you have worked on a few of these roofs.
Wind coming over and around the Ochils accelerates and changes direction as it drops down the scarp face, which means exposure here does not follow the simple rule of thumb that works elsewhere — the elevation you would expect to be sheltered is not always the sheltered one. Rain driven off the hills arrives with force on north-facing elevations that would be the protected side in an open setting.
Practically, that shows up as ridge and verge detailing working loose, slates lifting along exposed edges, and flashings being worked at continuously where they would sit undisturbed a few miles out on the carse.
Mill Terraces and Villa Property
The villages grew around the woollen mills, and the housing divides fairly cleanly.
Mill workers' terraces
Alva, Tillicoultry and Menstrie all carry long terraced rows built for mill workers — continuous slate roofs running across several properties, shared chimney stacks, and gutter runs spanning multiple houses.
That construction means a fault at one point often shows up somewhere else entirely, repairs sometimes need coordination with a neighbour, and a shared stack needs doing as a whole rather than half. We will establish all of that at inspection rather than partway through the job.
Dollar and the larger villa property
Dollar has a different character again — substantial Victorian and Edwardian villa property, much of it built around the Academy, with the complex roof geometry that goes with houses of that period and scale. Steep slate pitches, dormers, bays, decorative ridge detailing and a great deal of leadwork.
On property like this the slate frequently outlasts everything around it. What fails is the lead — valleys, flashings and dormer detailing. Traditional leadwork is one of our accredited specialisms and it is where most repairs on this stock actually need to happen.

Do you cover all four Hillfoots villages?
Yes — Menstrie, Alva, Tillicoultry and Dollar, along with the smaller settlements between them.
Why do my slates keep lifting?
Usually nail fatigue, where the original fixings have corroded past the point of holding, or inadequate fixing at exposed edges. Along the Hillfoots the wind coming off the scarp makes this more common than it is a few miles out. If it is recurring, a proper inspection is worth more than another individual repair.
Can you work on a mid-terrace roof?
Yes. Terraced work is routine for us, and it is most of the older housing in Alva, Tillicoultry and Menstrie. It sometimes needs coordination around shared stacks or access.
Do you work on the larger villas in Dollar?
Yes. Period villa roofing — natural slate with substantial leadwork and complex geometry — is one of our specialisms.
Is the exposure really different here?
Yes, noticeably. The hill scarp accelerates and redirects wind coming off the Ochils, so exposure does not follow the pattern you would expect from the compass alone. It affects how we specify fixings and detailing.
