Roofing at the foot of the Ochils
The Hillfoots villages lie along the base of a steep hill scarp, and that affects how buildings weather. Wind moving over and around the Ochils speeds up and changes direction on the scarp face, so the side of a house you would expect to be sheltered may not be.
Rain driven off the hills hits north-facing walls hard, even though those walls would be protected in open country.
In practice this means loose ridge and verge detailing, slates lifting at exposed edges, and flashings under constant stress. The same flashings a few miles out on the carse would be left undisturbed.

The villages grew up around the woollen mills, and the housing falls into two groups.
Mill workers’ terraces
Alva, Tillicoultry and Menstrie have long terraced rows with continuous slate roofs, shared chimney stacks and gutters that run across several houses. A fault in one place can show up somewhere else, a repair may need a neighbour’s cooperation, and a shared stack has to be treated as one job. We establish all of this at inspection, not partway through the work.
Dollar and the larger villa property
Dollar has substantial Victorian and Edwardian villas, many built around the Academy. They have complex roof shapes, steep slate pitches, dormers, bays, decorative ridge work and a lot of leadwork. The slate often outlasts everything else. It is the lead in the valleys, flashings and dormers that usually fails. Traditional leadwork is one of our accredited specialisms, and it is where most repairs on this housing are needed.

Do you cover all four Hillfoots villages?
Yes. We cover Menstrie, Alva, Tillicoultry and Dollar, plus the smaller settlements between them.
Why do my slates keep lifting?
The usual cause is nail fatigue, where corroded fixings no longer hold, or weak fixing at exposed edges. Wind off the scarp makes this more common here than a few miles away. If it keeps happening, a full inspection is more useful than repeated spot repairs.
Can you work on a mid-terrace roof?
Yes. Terraced work is routine for us, and terraces make up most of the older housing in Alva, Tillicoultry and Menstrie. It sometimes needs coordination around shared stacks or access.
Do you work on the larger villas in Dollar?
Yes. Period villa roofing, with natural slate, substantial leadwork and complex roof shapes, is a specialism of ours.
Is the exposure really different here?
Yes, noticeably. The scarp speeds up and redirects wind coming off the Ochils, so exposure does not follow compass direction alone. That affects how we specify fixings and detailing.
