What Are The Best Roofing Materials in the UK in 2024

Choosing the best roofing material is important because, as well as enhancing the appearance of your property, it provides protection against the weather for everyone and everything inside. Without a proper roof, your property won’t be watertight and won’t effectively keep everyone warm and dry.

When choosing the best roofing material, there are several factors you need to consider. These include the local weather conditions, especially if you live in an exposed area, how you want your property to look and what you can afford to pay.

Choosing the Best Tiles

There are a number of roofing materials available and some of these are more suited to particular situations. The most common types are:

  • Concrete tiles, which are available in many styles, sizes and colours, so can be chosen to blend in with your property. The variety means there is a range of prices available so you can choose one to fit your budget. These tiles are strong and impermeable to weather and will last over fifty years but are relatively heavy and can become discoloured over time.
  • Clay tiles have excellent durability, are hard wearing and require little maintenance. Many are made from clay that gives a Terracotta colour and so are ideal for traditional properties although they may not be the best choice where there are high winds.
  • Slate tiles are made from a natural material and so may be a more expensive choice. However, they have a classic style that is particularly suitable for rural properties. Although they appear less substantial than clay and concrete tiles, they’re extremely resilient and resistant to weather, lasting up to 100 years if looked after properly.
  • Shingle roofing comes in two forms. Asphalt shingles are low cost, easy to install and can be made to look like slate, wood or clay. Composite shingles last longer — up to fifty years —and can also have the appearance of other materials.
  • Metal roofs are extremely durable and energy efficient as well as being resistant to harsh environments. The material is also completely recyclable although metal roofs can be noisy during heavy rain.
  • Solar tiles are less common, more expensive and less durable but will generate electricity and so save on energy bills.

Helping You Choose

The choice of roofing materials is very broad so you’re bound to find something suitable for your property. Your choice will depend on your particular circumstances — the location and style of your property, any planning restrictions, your budget and what you hope to achieve.

Heavier materials require a strong structure to support them so they may need the installation of additional or replacement roof trusses. In these cases, the use of lighter materials may avoid unnecessary expense if your existing roof trusses are otherwise sound.
