• Traditional felt which many people think of as an inferior choice although that’s usually only when poor quality materials are used. In fact, a bitumen felt roof is one of the most affordable choices and can provide long-term waterproofing when applied properly. Bitumen blocks are heated in a boiler until molten and this is then spread onto the roof deck, which may be covered by a membrane or insulation layer. A felt membrane, comprising a high performance polyester-based material, is then rolled onto the bitumen and fixed firmly in place.
• Modified bitumen is felt that is saturated in bitumen during manufacturing and has filler components that provide rigidity, resistance to tearing and water resistance in a breathable material. During application, the rolls of treated felt are heated with a torch as they are rolled out so that the bitumen melts to provide adhesion between the felt and the roof deck. The material performs well in very low temperatures and is available in a wide variety of colours but does not have as long a lifespan as some other materials, usually about fifteen years.
• Glass reinforced polyester (GRP) is a fibreglass roofing system that comprises a reinforced mat and liquid roofing resin. The material is applied to the roofing boards, with trims added to the perimeter, and a top coat is then added. The material can be cut to shape so is suitable for complex roof shapes, is available in a range of colours and generally has a twenty-year guarantee.
• Built up roofing is one of the oldest flat roofing types and comprises a series of layers. A layer of asphalt is laid down, which is then covered with boards and a layer of gravel that is sealed with more asphalt. This creates a very durable surface that is safe to walk on, is resistant to harsh weather but is quite heavy and so needs a strong roof structure to support it.
• Standing seam metal roofs comprise panels that lock together at seams or ridges and allow the metal to expand as it heats up and contract as it cools, unlike metal roofs that are screwed into place. • Thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) is a lightweight, single-ply membrane that has a white coating and so reflects heat to keep the interior cool. It is easy to install but shows dirt easily so may not be suitable for highly visible areas.
• Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is a popular material that resists fire and storm damage as well as keeping buildings cool in summer, so reducing air conditioning costs. It is easy to install and can last 30-40 years if installed correctly.
• Ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) is lightweight, extremely elastic and very tough. It is a single-ply rubber subsystem that is glued to the roof decking with no need for joins while trims are bonded to the edges to give a clean and watertight finish. There are no expansion or contraction problems and the roof can last up to fifty years. The material is black and reflects light so can be used where glare needs to be avoided. Although previously made from an oil mixture, EPDM is now made from three monomers and so is often referred to as a terpolymer.
